The offer of guns chambered for the interesting – and long almost forgotten – 5.7x28mm cartridge is increasingly large lately, and Ruger contributes with its latest release, the lightweight, compact LC Carbine in 5.7x28mm. Its bolt-over-barrel design allows for a compact size, even if the barrel length is a still-respectable 16.25"/413 mm. Made in the USA and weighing under 6 lb/2.7 kg, the Ruger LC Carbine is intended for the range, backpacking, small game hunting – “or anywhere a versatile and reliable carbine is appreciated,” as they claim.
Ruger LC Carbine, same magazine and controls as the Ruger-5.7 pistol
Speaking of compatibility, the new 5.7x28m Ruger LC Carbine feeds through the grip using the same steel magazines and controls as the Ruger-5.7 pistol – that's why it is introduced as the “ultimate range companion”. The carbine features Ruger's proven Secure Action fire-control mechanism as the pistol too. The Secure Action system combines a protected internal hammer with a bladed-safety trigger that has a short, smooth pull, clean break and positive reset. The manufacturer ensures that even when using typical 40 grain 5.7x28mm jacketed bullets, the carbine's felt recoil is comparable to a .22 LR.
The 1911-style manual safety is ambidextrous. Other safeties include an integrated trigger safety; lightweight firing pin; neutrally balanced sear with significant engagement and strong spring tension; and hammer catch to help prevent the hammer from contacting the firing pin unless the trigger is pulled. As for the other controls, the magazine release latch is extended for better ergonomics, and the charging handle is reversible.
The reversible side-folding stock is compatible with Picatinny rail-mounted accessory stocks (on models so equipped). The Rapid Deploy sights can be folded for storage – the sights are adjustable for windage and elevation, while the full length Picatinny rail allows for optic mounting.
The fluted, nitride-coated alloy steel barrel is durable and lightweight. A 1/2"-28 TPI thread with thread protector allows for the attachment of popular muzzle accessories including muzzle brakes, flash hiders and suppressors (on models so equipped). The CNC-milled handguard with M-LOK accessory attachment slots is Type III hard-coat anodized aluminum. Multiple QD sling sockets allow for maximum versatility.
Ruger President and CEO, Chris Killoy, says, "I can't describe how ergonomic the LC Carbine feels in your hands. You have to experience it on the range to really appreciate how it balances and moves. The controls are intuitive and conveniently located, and the lack of felt recoil makes it hard to put down."
The new Ruger LC Carbine in 5.7x28mm comes with one Ruger-5.7 20-round steel pistol magazine, ambidextrous magazine button, M-LOK QD sling socket and hex wrenches for disassembly. The whole package is priced at $979 (MSRP).
