Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical, the latest “tacticool” addition to the 940 shotgun family

The new Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical is obviously built on the same platform and uses the same redesigned, clean-running gas-operating system as the other 940 Pro shotgun models – meaning that it can shoot up to 1500 rounds between cleaning intervals.

The receiver cuts of the 940 Pro Tactical  allow for the direct mounting of low-profile micro-dot sights (Shield RMSc footprint).

But Mossberg has added some more extra features here. First and foremost, the receiver cuts allow for the direct mounting of low-profile micro-dot sights (Shield RMSc footprint). A cover plate is included for when an optic is not mounted, while the receiver is also drilled and tapped for the option of adding rail-mounted optics.

Other highlights include oversized controls; M-LOK compatibility; stock adjustability; and an 18.5-inch barrel with interchangeable choke system. Internal parts are corrosion-resistant – the gas piston, magazine tube, hammer and sear are nickel boron-coated for durability.

According to Mossberg, the gas system is compatible with factory-manufactured 2.75 and 3-inch shotshells and provides for faster, more reliable cycling.

The receiver is also drilled and tapped for adding rail-mounted optics. A cover plate is included for when an optic is not mounted.

In detail, the matte-finished barrel is threaded for use with interchangeable AccuChoke choke tubes and the gun comes with a Cylinder choke tube.

The barrel is threaded for use with the Accu-Choke interchangeable choke system. The barrel clamp features a sling swivel stud and dual-sided M-LOK compatibility slots. The fiber front sight is of LPA manufacture.

The shotgun is equipped with a fiber optic front sight. The loading port is enlarged and beveled, with an elongated, pinch-free elevator and bright orange anodized follower.

Speaking of controls, in order to improve manipulation the knurled charging handle is extended, and the bolt release lever is oversized and ergonomically optimized.

Thanks to the extended magazine tube, capacity is 7+1 with 2.75-inch shells. The barrel clamp features a sling swivel stud plus dual-sided M-LOK compatible-slots for the addition of commonly used tactical accessories such as lasers and lights.

Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical stock

Stock length-of-pull is user-adjustable using spacers/recoil pads with a range of 12.5-14.25, while drop at comb and cast can be adjusted
with the use of incremental stock shims.

Coming to the synthetic stock, length-of-pull is user-adjustable with a range of 12.5-14.25.

Drop at comb and cast can be adjusted with the use of incremental stock shims. The synthetic forend is streamlined. Aggressive texturing for a secure grip and black matte finish for both stock and forend are Mossberg’s signature.

The 12-ga 940 Pro Tactical is clearly intended for tactical and defensive use: durability, ease of operation and functionality are the keywords here.

Price, at $1,120, can't be defined cheap – but that's probably the cost of “tacticoolness”.
