Modernizing a classic: Walther releases the PPK/S SD pistol with threaded barrel

Walther’s first ever suppressor ready PPK, the new PPK/S SD is a modern evolution of the iconic PPK/S, now enhanced with a threaded barrel for suppressor use. Caliber is the classic .32 ACP. As mentioned, this “marks Walther’s first introduction of a threaded barrel option for the PPK/S, bringing cutting-edge functionality to a design steeped in history and innovation.”

Walther PPK/S SD, a legend with modern features

Few pistol can be appropriately defined as “iconic”, and the Walther PPK is certainly one of them. Nor just because at the time of its introduction, over 80 years ago, it was one of the world's first successful double-action semi-automatic pistols and inspired an entirely new category in the firearm industry – that is the carry pistol – but also because of its association with James Bond, the spy character created by Ian Fleming, both in novels and movies.

Walther PPK/S SD
The Walther PPK/S SD – here the stainless version, complete with a magazine without finger rest – is a compact carry gun based on a classic and proven design.

Now, a brief history of the PPK with acronym explanation: PPK stands for Polizeipistole Kriminal (literally "police pistol criminal" in German), and the gun was released in 1931 as a smaller version of the original PP (Polizeipistole), introduced two years before for the German police.

The top of the Walther PPK/S SD's slide
Like other PPK models, the top of the Walther PPK/S SD's slide is cut with a wave to reduce glare. Sights are fixed.

The PPK/S variant was developed in the 1970s for the US market combining the slide of the PPK and the frame of the PP – basically, to circumvent the US law that banned the importation of guns not meeting certain requirements of length and weight. The latest evolution, the one we are dealing with here, is named  PPK/S SD, where SD is the acronym for Shalldämpfer, the German word for silencer.

Walther PPK/S SD with a black finish
The new Walther PPK/S SD is available with a black finish too.

While retaining the classic fixed-barrel semi-auto design, the new Walther PPK/S SD adds in fact a precision-engineered threaded barrel designed with a special extension piece to maintain proper alignment and thickness when mounting a silencer, also guaranteeing a secure fit.

Being chambered in .32 ACP, the pistol is low-recoiling, making it an ideal choice for both experienced shooters and those new to suppressed firearms. A familiar feature of the PPK/S family carried over into the  PPK/S SD is the slide-mounted safety/decocker.

The new PPK/S SD is available in both stainless and black finishes, at the same price of $1,099 (with two 7-round magazines included).
