Supergrade Commander Special, Wilson Combat’s Commander

If you’re looking for a top-quality, modern-made, Commander-size 1911 pistol, Wilson Combat has probably the right product for you. The Arkansas-based company renowned for its custom 1911 handguns has just introduced the “Supergrade Commander Special” model to its product line-up. And as you would expect from a manufacturer that prides itself on offering “unmatched level of exceptional reliability and peerless craftsmanship”, the new gun is a real steel jewel.

With its 4.25 in / 108 mm barrel and an overall length of just 7.85 in / 199 mm, the Supergrade Commander Special is the first Wilson Combat’s commander-sized 1911. It’s available in three calibers, .45 ACP, 9mm and 38 Super and in all-blued or two tone versions. 

In any case, slide and frame sport polished sides, which creates a pleasant aesthetic effect in this otherwise very classic design. The stainless steel barrel is match grade with flush-cut reverse crown and couplet to a thick flange bushing, while the round-butt slide features a 30 LPI high cut checkered frontstrap and a contoured magazine well. The bobbed high-ride beavertail grip safety, magazine release and retro checkered thumb safety are all Wilson Combat Bullet Proof parts. The guide rod is full length, and hammer is Commander-type, of course. The white gold bead front sight is from Wilson Combat’s own Battlesight series, with a rather comfortable sight radius of 5.95 in / 151 mm.

The nice deluxe burl wood smooth grips with sterling silver medallions and the fluted chamber are also noteworthy.  The medium-length trigger is characterized by a pull weight of 3 ½ - 4 ½ lb (1587-2041 g). As for the magazine, capacity is 8 rounds in .45 ACP caliber.

Wilson Combat guarantees an accuracy of  1.5 in at 25 yards. Quality comes at a price, however: 5350 USD for the .45 ACP version, 5455 USD for both the 9mm and .38 Super versions. In Europe the Supergrade Commander Special will be available around mid-2019.
