2024 Olympic Games, Day 5: new qualification world record in 50m rifle 3 positions men's for China's Yukun Liu and gold in trap women's for Guatemalan Adriana Ruano Oliva (with record too)

Qualifying for the 50m rifle 3 positions men's final, tomorrow at 9.30 a.m., are China's Yukun Liu (594), who also set a new Olympic record (he has also held the world record of 597 since June 2024), Norway's Jon-Hermann Hegg (593), Ukraine's Serhiy Kulish (592), France's Lucas Bernard Denis Kryzs (592), Serbia's Lazar Kovacevic (592), Poland's Tomasz Bartnik (591), India's Swapnil Kusale (590) and the Czech Jiri Privartsky (590).

Shooting half under an outdoor canopy, the competitors in the rifle 3-position men's event had only a limited amount of fresh air available to them. Especially since even for the 3x20-shot competition they wrap themselves in warm leather jackets and pants. However, this also serves to ensure stability in the shooting position, especially standing and kneeling, and one has to put up with a lot.

Here are the men's results after the qualifications. Try the plus sign function in the list, it is worth it: here you can call up the individual series and also the pictures of the shots. The presentation, display and speed of the results should be emphasised at this point: this is an Olympic standard.

2024 Olympic Games: men versus women in shooting

Successful rifle coach Heinz Reinkemeier (who has coached, among others, former Olympic champions Niccolò Campriani and Abhinav Bindra) posted an interesting and surprising comparison on Facebook, following up on our comment yesterday on gender differences in shooting sports:

When comparing the top 20 places after the preliminary competition (there was a different ranking in the final), the women's results are significantly higher than the men's, with Olympic champion Hyojuin Bon outscoring gold medallist Lihao Sheng by almost three points. Only at the bottom of the top 20 do the men have slightly higher scores presumably a sign of the higher performance density due to the number of participants worldwide.

According to Heinz Reinkemeier (www.heinzlive.com), statistics will continue to be analysed in his next textbook.

2024 Olympic Games: Silvana Maria Stanco wins silver in women's trap with her Beretta DT11

Adriana Ruano Oliva of Guatemala won gold in trap with a new Olympic record (45 out of 50 targets).
The 32-year-old Silvana Maria Stanco won a well-deserved silver medal. She was the first to qualify for Paris and always at a high level.

In the trap women's final, the Guatemalan Adriana Ruano Oliva did the race of her life and won gold with 45/50. A well-deserved silver for Italy's Silvana Maria Stanco who finished with 40/50. Third was Australia's Penny Smith, who was sixth in Tokyo. The Guatemalan was gold medallist at the 2023 Pan American Games, while Stanco improves on her fifth place in Tokyo, but boasts an individual European title and three World Cup victories. Many top female shooters failed to qualify, such as Italy's Jessica Rossi (9th place), world record holder Zuzana Rehak Stevecekova (Slovakia) and Americans Ryann Paige Phillips and Rachel Tozier.

Here is the list of results of the women's trap final.

2024 Olympic Games: snapshots of the 5th day of events

After the honours, the flag-raising and the national anthem, the next discipline follows: selfies on the podium. It is remarkable here (mixed team 10m air rifle) that the teams get along well (from left: Kazakhstan, China, Korea).
He can smile a little: Yu Xie, Olympic air pistol champion against strong Italian competition, proudly displays his gold medal. A piece of iron from the Eiffel Tower is set in the centre of all the medals, making them truly unique.
Zorana Arunovic and Damir Mikec of Serbia were so happy about their gold medal in the mixed team 10m air pistol, immediately after the last shot of the final, that they rolled around on the floor of the final hall.

Dr Franco Gusalli Beretta (left) and Carlo Beretta also sign the autograph wall in the ISSF House. Like RWS, Beretta is a premium partner of the ISSF; more than half of the shooters at the Olympics shoot skeet or trap with a Beretta shotguns.
IOC President Thomas Bach (blue shirt) also joined the shooters in Châteauroux to talk to athletes and officials and, of course, to watch a final. To his right, ISSF President Luciano Rossi and ISSF Secretary General Alessandro Nicotra di San Giacomo.
Olympic trap champion Nathan Hales (GBR) was also welcomed and honoured by President Luciano Rossi at the ISSF House.
