A dozen years after the introduction of the original series, for this 2024 Ruger launched the American Rifle Generation II, originally available in Standard and more compact Ranch versions. The U.S. manufacturer is now adding the new American Rifle Generation II Predator rifles, available in no less than 18 configurations and in the full Gen II caliber assortment, ranging from .204 Ruger up to .300 Win.Mag. But what are the features of the Gen II, and what distinguishes the Predator rifles from the Standard and Ranch versions? First things first.
Ruger American Rifle Generation II, now with the Predator variants
As mentioned above, the American Rifle Generation II is already offered in two versions with different barrel lengths: Standard, with 20”/508 mm barrel; and Ranch, with 16.10”-16.40” barrel (409-416 mm – specific barrel length depends on caliber). Compared to the Generation I, in the Gen II bolt and receiver have been reengineered for smooth operation. The full diameter three-lug bolt is CNC machined from stainless steel and offers a 70 degree throw for ample scope clearance. The bolt handle is threaded for easy customization and fitted with an anodized round knob.
Other improvements over the Generation I are the three-position tang safety and a more ergonomic stock. The latter has been redesigned for more rigidity thanks to the addition of cross webbing, and features a removable comb riser and length of pull spacer. By simply removing the installed LOP spacer in fact you will obtain a 305 mm LOP for smaller shooters. Ruger also uses the patented Power Bedding with integral bedding block system to positively locate the receiver. Barrel is free-floating for improved accuracy.
The rifles come with a factory installed radial muzzle brake. A one-piece Picatinny scope base is installed on the action's top. The American Rifle Generation II incorporates the Ruger Marksman Adjustable Trigger, which offers a crisp, clean release with a pull weight that is user adjustable between 3 and 5 pounds (1,360-2,268 g).
The Predator variants are now added to the series: their distinguishing features are a Burnt Bronze Cerakote finish and the green stock with black and bronze splatter texture. While the Standard versions are offered with a 20”/508 mm barrel and the Ranch use 16.10” or 16.40” barrels (409-416 mm), at 22"/559 mm in the Predator the medium-contour, cold-hammer forged is also longer in order to achieve greater velocities. And yes, the price is the same for all the American Rifle Gen II, that is $729 – Standard, Ranch or Predator versions, irrespective of caliber – which makes them affordable firearms.
