Sordin Supreme Pro-X SFA: the flexible hearing protector offers hunters and shooters some interesting advantages and customisation options

The Swedish hearing protection specialist Sordin is one of the world's leading manufacturers in this segment. In addition to hearing protectors for law enforcement and the military, Sordin also manufactures hearing protectors for well-known forestry and machinery manufacturers. With the Sordin Supreme Pro-X and Pro model series, the Swedes also have specially designed electronic earmuffs in their catalog for hunters. The higher-quality models are found in the Pro-X series. And the Sordin Supreme Pro-X SFA, a brand new and very versatile model, has now been added to this range. The suffix SFA stands for a particularly flexible and therefore versatile insulation concept, which we present to you here with all its special features.

Proven features of the current Sordin Supreme models

Waterproof microphones transport the ambient noise to the loudspeakers inside the cups of the Sordin Supreme Pro-X SFA, while the electronics attenuate hazardous noise. Here you can see the Pro-X SFA with green cups.

Like all Sordin Supreme variants, the Pro-X SFA also provides excellent audio reproduction and protects the wearer from harmful noises. Built-in microphones on the outside of the cups pick up ambient noise, which is then reproduced by high-quality speakers inside the cups. Sound reproduction is limited to a maximum of 82 dB thanks to the level-dependent electronic function. This compresses hazardous noises to such an extent that you can even talk to other people and hear the instructions of the stand supervisors, even when others are shooting.

In addition, faint ambient noises can be amplified, which is of course a huge advantage for the hunter, who can detect approaching game even earlier than with bare ears. To cater for right and left-handed shooters, Sordin has flattened the bottom of the cups on both sides so that they do not collide with the buttstock of a rifle, even when the rifle is taken up quickly.

With the Sordin Supreme Pro-X SFA the manufacturer relies on a flexible attenuation concept – Features of the Slim range

This photo of the Sordin Supreme Pro-X SFA shows very clearly how the volume of the cups is increased by the additional plastic ring between the cup and the sealing ring.

The Sordin Supreme Pro-X SFA is based on the new "Sordin Flexible Attenuation" concept and has been developed with the user in mind and the ability to adapt to frequently changing noise conditions. At an SNR value of 31 dB, it protects your hearing even in extreme noise environments and at the same time offers the option of adapting the hearing protection to less extreme noise conditions in favour of a slimmer cup design, for example if the hunter uses a silencer on his/her rifle in addition to the hearing protection, or the sports shooter switches from a centerfire to a rimfire discipline, for which an SNR value of 26 dB is sufficient. The flexibility of the SFA models is further enhanced by the fact that they can be used for different operating conditions, for example by being easily converted for mounting on helmets if required.

The headband of the Sordin Supreme Pro-X SFA is also suitable for larger head shapes.

The extra broad headband – also based on the Slim series  –  is particularly suitable for larger head shapes. It consists of a thin, black-coated spring steel plate with a spring steel wire bracket attached to each end. Sordin covers the plate itself with black leather to increase wearing comfort.

With the Sordin Supreme Pro-X SFA, the headband is fixed to the hinged arms of the capsule using wire brackets, as with the Slim.

The headband is connected to the cups via the ends of the wire brackets. The wires are fixed to the hinge arms of the cups, and the length of the headband can also be adjusted. If required, optional adapters for helmet mounting on ARC rails, available from the Sordin accessories, can be used instead of the headband. However, the seams of the leather cover on the headband of the Supreme Pro-X SFA model must be cut open in order to remove the connecting cable between the two cups.

The various audio profiles of the HEAR2 sound system are also activated on the Supreme Pro-X SFA using the On-Off and volume buttons (+ and - ) on the left ear cup of the hearing protector. Different beep signals help with the setting.

In addition, the Supreme Pro-X SFA is of course equipped with the new Sordin HEAR2 audio system and offers outstanding sound quality thanks to the four different audio profiles. We already reported in detail here on all4hunters.com about the HEAR2 with the Hunting, Shooting, Focus and Comms audio profiles. It is operated using the three buttons on the left cup, which are also used to switch on and adjust the volume. Thanks to the useful "Quick Guide" in business card format, hunters can quickly familiarise themselves with the operation. Forgetful hunters or hunters who rarely use the hearing protection can put the quick guide between their credit cards in their wallet as a precaution. Shooters who only use the hearing protection on the shooting range are more likely to stick with a preferred setting and thus in shooting mode, unless they use the 3.5 mm jack input on the Pro-X SFA  –  as some hunters do –  to connect their mobile phone via the cable supplied, for example. However, depending on the type of phone, this requires an additional adapter from a mobile phone or electronics retailer. There are simply too many different standards for Sordin to include the right adapter for every phone model. It is easier, on the other hand, to connect hunting radio sets, such as those frequently used in Scandinavian hunting grounds.

Intermediate rings and additional foam inserts increase the attenuation performance of the Sordin Supreme Pro-X SFA if required

Here, the additional foam insert, the intermediate ring and the standard sealing ring with foam filling have been removed from a capsule of the Sordin Suprem Pro-X SFA (from left to right).

The Sordin Supreme Pro-X SFA comes with an additional spacer ring, which can be removed if required, and an additional foam insert for each cup. This gives it a higher passive attenuation than the Slim model on which it is based. Sordin supplies the Suprem Prox-X SFA with foam-filled ear sealing rings as standard. However, sealing rings filled with silicone gel are also available as an option to increase wearing comfort, especially for spectacle wearers. The sealing rings can be changed or removed just as quickly as the intermediate rings, which Sordin uses to increase the cuo volume and thus the potential attenuation performance of the SFA model. The rings are only "clicked" into their counterpart with a circumferential groove. To remove them, simply grip them from behind with your index and middle fingers and pull them forwards with a little courage. When reinserting the intermediate rings, don't forget to put the additional foam pads back into the cups first. While the rings do not require side labelling and fit on both the right and left, the additional foam inlays have clearly visible "L" and "R" markings, which are also helpful when putting them back on.

On the back of the left earpiece of the Sordin Supreme Pro-X SFA you can see the 3.5 mm jack input protected by a rubber cap and on the right the blackened stainless steel screw cap of the battery compartment, which is protected against loss. Here you can see the hearing protector without the intermediate ring and with the optionally available silicone gel-filled sealing rings.
